an open letter to america's media    30 October, 11:16 AM

To Whom It May Concern,

You have taken on the role of distributing information. This role has not been thrust upon you, rather, you have sought it out. You obtained an education, and have worked hard, so that you can be the funnel by which America becomes informed.

My question to you know is, “Why have you forgotten to disseminate information?” There was a time—or so I’ve been told by my father—when the media reported. There were “journalists” who wanted to find out the answers to questions. To confront controversy head on, and to find out facts. Facts. There were also people who simply spouted off opinion, but these were the Joe’s around the water-cooler. Everyone took their words with a grain of salt.

How did you let the paradigm shift? You have taken it upon yourselves to stop reporting. To stop being journalists. You know summarize a days event, while giving no background whatsoever. You only report what others have said, paying no attention to the truthfulness (or lack thereof) of their statements. What you’re doing is wrong, it’s scary, and it’s incredibly dangerous. You have a duty, if not as journalists, then at least as citizens, to do your job properly.

All of the newspapers and cable news networks have websites now, and most allow comments by site users. Questions are raised on these websites that the networks/papers would never publish or allow to be spoken on air. So why allow them online? Because it’s easier to look the other way? Because it’s not your problem? Barack Obama isn’t a citizen, in fact, he’s a terrorist, and Sarah Palin’s youngest son isn’t her own child. Really? Where are the journalists?

I’m sorry, I forgot, you didn’t “report” this. You just sat by while misinformation stewed. Why? Because it’s great for business isn’t it? People spent time on your website reading this nonsense, and your ad revenue soared.

So I suppose the real question is, does that make it worth it? I know the answer from the executives, “Of course!” Because their job is to make money, they have no obligation to report. But what about you, reporters. Do you ever feel like you’re not a human? Do you ever feel like you’ve abandoned your country? This isn’t an issue of left, or right, I’m asking all of you on every side. Your ratings might be going up, but you are failing your basic obligations.

If I may posit a scenario; what happens when Barack Obama is elected, and a lunatic (or many lunatics) decide to rebel. A riot is started, or violent action is attempted. This was all because these people were positive Obama is not an American citizen. He’s a Muslim actually. No one on television ever bothered to look into the camera frankly and say, “Are you kidding? Of course he’s an American, and to think otherwise is ludicrous.” Not to mention the fact that no one had the courage or decency to look into the camera and say “Muslim, or Arab, and terrorist are not interchangeable words.”

Doesn’t it feel like you’d hold some of the blame for these peoples’ actions? You are being careless with your responsibility, and you are failing us all. The key to a successful democracy is an informed population, and ironically enough, the people designed to inform us are now working against us. So where are we to turn? What is our course of action? And what of all the people who aren’t keen enough to realize that over the years you’ve stopped reporting and started repeating?

I don’t know the answers to these questions, so I’m left to begging. I beg you. The American people beg you. Please stop repeating, and please start reporting. We need it. We need you to be responsible. The beauty of our nation is our freedom, or right to have you dig through the muck and find the truth, and then inform the people. Please don’t abuse this precious right. Please do your job. Please put the country before ratings and profits.

Sincerely,

An American

secret identity!    29 September, 08:43 PM

i think i’ve solved it. i don’t believe there are 2 people on this earth capable of speaking as incoherently as Sarah Palin… and thus… i’ve discovered her true identity!

i give you the real Sarah Palin! that’s right! she is miss teen south carolina!

let’s compare please:

Palin:
But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health-care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy, helping the — it’s got to be all about job creation, too, shoring up our economy and putting it back on the right track. So health-care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions and tax relief for Americans.

Upton:
I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, people out there in our nation don’t have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as, uh, South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future, for our children.

i rest my case

Richard Milhous Palin    19 September, 10:51 PM

in a rather nixonian move, sarah palin is taking an interesting stance on being investigated in alaska: she’s ignoring it.

yea.

all of the witnesses (including her husband) who were subpoenaed by the investigating commission simply refused to show up yesterday. awesome, right?

this appears to be a game of “catch me if you can.” awesome. we have a 5 year old running for vp.
